Valentine for a Craftsman

Divided by purpose and terrain,

Builders, from those who sell early for gain

Before masonry laid

Flip a foundation for personal claim

-

In the Grove where the builders dwell

Orchard blossoms release their sweet smell

On one breeze bade

Delight for both yet-to and ‘ready do-well

-

Sacks of Gold will impress with size

But pique no devotion from working and wise

Only ideas-made

Merit the cathedrals of canonized

-

Wealth or sweat that is ventured to spur

Creation brings riches more nobly earned

Than empty trade

Garage to Pavilion a better return

-

And eras are forged by brilliant ones

Whose obsessions inspire our adulations

Our homage repaid

With Jobs that mean more than gilding the Hamptons

-

When their fruits turn the normal, divine

Our gods remain with us shoulder-shoulder in line

Other options weighed

Invention changes the man less than mankind
